Wardang Island
An island off Port Victoria ringed by eight shipwrecks forming a renowned maritime heritage dive trail.
Wardang Island lies a few kilometres off Port Victoria on the western coast of Yorke Peninsula, a low, sandy island with a rich maritime and Aboriginal history. Known as Wauraltee Island until 1940, it is owned by the Narungga people and access to the island itself is restricted. The waters around it, however, are famous among divers and snorkellers for the Wardang Island Maritime Heritage Trail, a self-guided underwater route linking eight shipwrecks scattered across the surrounding reefs and shallows. The island and its passages also offer excellent fishing for whiting and snapper. Boats launch from Port Victoria to explore the trail, which ranges from shallow snorkelling sites to deeper dives. Always check conditions, respect cultural restrictions and dive within your experience.
