Port Clinton
A small town at the top of Gulf St Vincent famed for its vast tidal flats and prime blue swimmer crabbing.
Port Clinton sits near the head of Gulf St Vincent on the eastern side of Yorke Peninsula, where the gulf narrows into broad tidal flats and mangroves. The town is best known for its exceptional blue swimmer crabbing: at low tide the shallow sandy flats are perfect for raking crabs, a much-loved family pastime that draws visitors from across South Australia. The same shallows and the adjacent Clinton Conservation Park are rich in birdlife, including migratory wading birds, making this a quietly rewarding spot for nature lovers. A boat ramp gives access to good whiting and squid grounds, and the foreshore caravan park makes an easy base. Bring a crab rake and a bucket, check the tide times and enjoy one of the peninsula's classic gulf-coast experiences.
