Wallaroo Smelter Chimney

Wallaroo Smelter Chimney

A towering brick chimney, the last great relic of Wallaroo's copper smelting works that once turned ore from across the Copper Triangle.

Rising above the Wallaroo townscape, the old smelter chimney is the most visible reminder of the industry that built the Copper Coast. The Wallaroo smelting works processed ore carted from the mines at Moonta and Kadina, and at its peak the smelter was among the largest in the southern hemisphere.

The works closed in the 1920s when the copper ran out, and most of the site has long since vanished, but the great brick stack survives as a heritage landmark. It stands as a monument to the thousands of Cornish and Welsh workers who laboured in heat and smoke to refine the metal.

There is no public access inside, but the chimney is easily viewed from the surrounding streets and makes a striking photo, especially when read alongside the mining ruins at Moonta to understand the full arc of the Copper Triangle story.
