Tipara Reef

An offshore reef and lighthouse off the Copper Coast.

A noted offshore reef and lighthouse off Moonta Bay, prized by boat anglers for snapper and whiting.

Out beyond the shallows of Moonta Bay lies Tipara Reef, a submerged system marked by a lighthouse standing alone in the gulf. It is one of the best-known fishing grounds on the Copper Coast, drawing boat anglers chasing snapper, whiting and squid over the reef and its surrounding sand.

The lighthouse, perched on its platform offshore, is a landmark for boaters working these waters and a reminder of how busy this coast once was with shipping bound for the copper ports.

Tipara is strictly a destination for those with a boat and the experience to handle open gulf water, but it looms large in the fishing lore of the northern Yorke Peninsula.
