A relaxed oyster town on Oyster Bay

Stansbury sits on the sheltered waters of Oyster Bay, on the eastern coast of Yorke Peninsula facing Gulf St Vincent. Known for its oysters since the earliest days of settlement, the town was first called Oyster Bay before being renamed Stansbury in 1873. Once a busy grain port, it remains a quiet, old-fashioned seaside escape, with a sheltered bay, calm swimming beaches and easygoing coastal charm.

A little history

The oyster beds that gave the district its name were heavily dredged through the 1800s and eventually exhausted, but oyster farming was reintroduced to the bay's clear waters in the twentieth century and continues today. You can trace this past at the Stansbury Museum, housed in the town's original school and teacher's residence, where local history, shell collections and pioneer relics are on display.

What visitors do here

The long Stansbury Jetty is a favourite spot for anglers chasing squid, crabs and a variety of fish, and a fine place to watch the gulf. The Stansbury Foreshore Walk follows the coast with rest areas, lookouts and interpretive signs, while the sheltered beach and calm waters suit swimming and quiet beach days.
