A broad tidal beach south of Edithburgh, good for low-tide walks and birdwatching across the flats.
Just south of Edithburgh, Sultana Point spreads out into a wide apron of tidal flats that empties dramatically at low water. It is a beach for walkers and birdwatchers rather than swimmers, with shorebirds working the exposed sand and seagrass for food.
Looking offshore you can pick out Troubridge Island and its lighthouse, and the shallow water here is part of the same sheltered system that makes the Edithburgh coast such productive crabbing country. The point itself is a cluster of shacks and houses looking out over the gulf.
Time your visit to a falling tide for the best of the flats, and bring binoculars for the birdlife.
