The Copper Coast Cornish heritage loop

A day through Little Cornwall, tracing the mines, museums and ports of the Copper Triangle.

1 day History lovers and pasty enthusiasts 6 stops

The plan

In the 1860s, copper turned three small towns on the northern Yorke Peninsula into one of the richest mining districts in the British Empire. Cornish miners poured in, bringing their chapels, brass bands, pasties and the nickname that stuck: Little Cornwall. This loop ties the Copper Triangle together in a single day.

Start at Moonta, the heart of the old mining field, then swing inland to Kadina and out to the port at Wallaroo. If you can, time your visit for the biennial Kernewek Lowender festival, when the whole district celebrates its Cornish roots.

Along the way

Begin underground in spirit at the Moonta Mines and its museum, then ride the tourist railway past the engine houses. In Kadina, the Farm Shed Museum gathers the farming and mining story under one roof, with historic Matta House alongside.

Finish at Wallaroo, the port that shipped the copper to the world, where the great smelter chimney and the jetty still mark the industrial age. A pasty along the way is practically compulsory.
