Port Moorowie
A quiet south-coast hideaway of reefs and beach shacks.
A sleepy shack settlement on the Yorke Peninsula's south coast with sheltered swimming, reef walks, a boat ramp and a scenic stretch of the Walk the Yorke trail.
Port Moorowie is the kind of place you find only by meaning to: a scatter of holiday shacks on the peninsula's south coast, south of Yorketown, where the road simply runs out at the sea. What it lacks in shops it makes up for in coastline — long sandy McEachens Beach to the west, sheltered bays, and accessible reefs that open up at low tide for reef walks and easy snorkelling.
About three kilometres of well-made coastal walking trail runs through the settlement as part of the Walk the Yorke route, winding from McEachens Beach along the clifftops to Point Gilbert, with beach access steps, shelters and seats along the way. At the Periwinkle Reef car park you'll find a barbecue shelter with local and Aboriginal history boards beside a native coastal garden — a thoughtful touch for such a small place.
There's a boat ramp for launching into the fish-rich waters of the lower gulf, and the settlement is a recognised access point for the Lower Yorke Peninsula Marine Park. Bring everything with you; the reward is a beach that's often entirely yours.
